What happened to Esme Cullen? ›

In 1921, after losing her baby to lung fever, Esme attempted suicide, but her attempt was unsuccessful. Later, Carlisle transformed her into a vampire on her deathbed. Some time later, the pair fell in love and married, starting to build a family of like-minded vegetarian vampires around them.

Absconding to Wisconsin, Esme lived with her cousin until she was eventually hunted down by Charles. Escaping his detection once again, Esme moved town and survived for a while as a schoolteacher, evading her husband by posing as a war widow.

Esme was born in 1895, and was 26 when she became a vampire, which makes her 110 years old at the beginning of Twilight.

In order to support herself, she became a school teacher, temporarily fulfilling her childhood dream. The child was born in 1921, only to die from lung fever 2 days later. Esme was devastated, and felt that she no longer had any reason to live, as she attempted suicide by jumping off a cliff.

Esme Cullen has no powers in the Twilight movies since she didn't have a pronounced gift before her transformation at the hands of her future mate, Carlisle. Like most of the franchise's vampires, Esme does possess super strength and super speed.
