When did Nirvana leave Sub Pop? ›

With its second album, Nevermind , Nirvana left Sub Pop and moved to the major record label Geffen/DGC. Within nine months of its September 1991 release, Nevermind had sold 4 million copies.

The rainbow flag sticker was created in June 2017 to help celebrate Pride month and has been in existence ever since. The owl sticker was designed by visual artist and musician Rick Froberg, who has recorded with The Obits and Hot Snakes, two bands on Sub Pop's roster.

Several of the surviving members of the band, along with guest vocalist, Eddie Vedder, went on to form Pearl Jam and came to Sub Pop with their first single.

Now they are ironically more valuable! Maybe a couple hundred of these exist. Still in print, you can get a boring black vinyl copy of Bleach for about $16, making this collectible edition worth about 187 copies of the version in stores now.

Disenchanted with Sub Pop, and with the Smart Studios sessions generating interest, Nirvana sought a deal with a major record label since no indie label could buy them out of their contract. Cobain and Novoselic consulted Soundgarden and Alice in Chains manager Susan Silver for advice.

Olympia, WA, 1979: a young Bruce Pavitt produced a fanzine named Subterranean Pop. As was the fashion of the time, this fanzine produced three cassette compilations of independent bands from around the country. In 1986, Pavitt moved himself to Seattle and released Sub Pop's first LP, a compilation entitled Sub Pop 100.

Pavitt and Poneman became partners, and by early 1988, they quit their day jobs and focused their full attention on the happening music scene in Seattle. Sub Pop Records opened up their offices here at the Terminal Sales Building in 1988.

Nirvana disbanded following Cobain's suicide in April 1994.
