When it comes to choosing an RV, the makes, models and options are endless. If you’ve already decided on a Class A Motorhome, there are still several things to consider from size to weight and towing capacity. Use the following information as an inclusive guide to all things Class A Motorhome.

What is a Class A Motorhome?

Have you ever wanted your own tour bus? A Class A motorhome is basically that – a large luxury bus to call your own. The largest class of RVs, Class A motorhomes are constructed on a specially designed chassis and powered by either diesel or gas engines. Many Class A RVs have several slide-out sections to open up the living space, and come with options such as; A/C, entertainment centres and spacious kitchens and bathrooms, to make you feel at home.

How Much Does a Class A Motorhome Cost?

A new Class A RV can range anywhere from $125,000 to over $500,000. If you are looking at buying a used Class A, the price is substantially lower, ranging from $20,000 to $300,000.

How Much Does a Class A Motorhome Weigh?

Class A motorhomes are the heaviest style, weighing an average of 33000-36000 pounds. The weight obviously varies with different models and makes, as some 40 feet long Class A RVs can weigh more than 40,000 pounds.

What is the Average Height of a Class A Motorhome?

Knowing the height of your RV is important, as many bridges, campgrounds, gas stations and winter storage facilities have height restrictions. Class A motorhomes have an average height of 10-12 feet, but remember that is before the addition of air conditioning units and satellites.

How Big is a Class A Motorhome’s Gas Tank?

The size of an RV’s gas tank is directly related to the size of the motorhome. The gas tank size of Class A motorhomes range from 80 to 150 gallons, with the most common fuel tank capacity being 80 gallons. Unfortunately, Class A RVs are also the least fuel efficient among all RV classes due to their large size.

How Much Can a Class A Motorhome Tow?

Many RVers, especially those driving big Class A motorhomes, like to bring a “toad” (slang for towed vehicle) with them. The good news is that Class A motorhomes have the some of the highest tow ratings. On average, a Class A motorhome will tow up to 10,000 pounds, with some towing as much as 15,000 pounds.

Do You Need a Special License to Drive a Class A Motorhome?

As long as you have a regular Class 5 licence, you are allowed to drive almost any size of RV, provided it’s not equipped with air brakes. If you’re looking for a little practice before you head out, the Alberta Motor Association offers a course called RV Smart. This half-day program will help new (and experienced) RVers strengthen their skills when manoeuvring an RV or towing or trailer.
