The departure of title sponsor Alfa Romeo means the Sauber Formula One team will be rebranded 'Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber' in 2024, according to the official lists released by the FIA on Friday.
In a rather short statement following the news that Audi will join F1 in 2026, Alfa Romeo has announced that it will leave the sport and cut ties with Sauber at the end of the 2023 season. “Alfa Romeo communicates that its partnership with Sauber Motorsport will end within the end of 2023,” the company said.
With Alfa Romeo-Sauber set to become the Audi factory team in 2026, the Italian marque has elected to partner with a different team from 2024 onwards. Alfa Romeo is to leave Sauber and partner with the Haas F1 team from 2024 onwards, with the American team's Ferrari engines set to be branded with the Alfa Romeo name.
We have known for a while that the Alfa Romeo brand will grow from its two models today to a lineup of five global electric vehicles in 2028. The new 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale will be the last Alfa to still have an internal-combustion engine.
Note that both models will be discontinued in 2026, allowing Alfa Romeo to become an EV-only brand by 2027.
The team will continue to run under the Alfa Romeo name in 2023, and is expected to revert to the Sauber identity for two final interim years with Ferrari power, before its partnership with Audi begins in 2026.
Is Cadillac coming to F1?
According to General Motors, the corporation has officially registered with the FIA as a Formula 1 power unit manufacturer starting in the 2028 season. Andretti Cadillac, which was approved to race in the FIA Formula One World Championship, will be powered by a GM power unit.
Sauber currently competes as Alfa Romeo Racing – powered by Ferrari engines – under a sponsorship deal valid until the end of 2023. From 2024, Sauber's Formula One cars will continue to be powered by Ferrari engines until Audi takes over as its supplier in 2026.
Alfa Romeo returned to the sport when Sauber was renamed at the beginning of 2019. Alfa Romeo ended their partnership with Sauber after 2023 and left Formula One to allow the team to be taken over by Audi for 2026.
Alfa Romeo and Haas join forces
Despite their Sauber ties coming to an end, Alfa Romeo had left the door open to continuing in Formula 1, and according to a report by the Italian branch of Motorsport.com, they have found a way to do so alongside fellow Ferrari engine customer team Haas.
The team will continue to run under the Alfa Romeo name in 2023, and is expected to revert to the Sauber identity for two final interim years with Ferrari power, before its partnership with Audi begins in 2026.
However as Sauber is pursuing a new tie-up with Audi, which will see the German manufacturer produce its own power unit for new technical regulations due to arrive in 2026, Alfa Romeo's collaboration with the team will come to an end.

Last year, Sauber revealed that it would officially become the Audi works team in 2026. With the current title sponsorship with Alfa Romeo ending this year, the team will have a new naming partner, and is expected to switch to the Sauber brand for 2024 as a part of its long-term project.
Alfa Romeo is no more in terms of a Formula 1 team name after the Sauber-run outfit confirmed their own name will return to the team's title for 2024.
Sauber currently races under the Alfa Romeo brand using Ferrari engines. It will continue to use their power units when it is expected to revert to the Sauber name for 2024 and 2025 before becoming the Audi factory team and using Audi engines on its entry into the sport.

Alfa Romeo's latest reinvention will be the biggest in the Italian brand's 113 year history. After more than a century powered by the internal combustion engine by the end of the decade the brand will be all-electric.

Enzo Ferrari left Alfa Romeo due to a disagreement over the direction of the company's racing department. Despite the success of the Scuderia Ferrari racing team, which was sponsored by Alfa Romeo, Enzo felt that the company was not fully committed to racing and wanted to strike out on his own.
Alfa Romeo's old reputation for shoddy reliability and its relative obscurity compared to more established luxury marques may contribute to the Giulia's steep depreciation. After five years, IntelliChoice projects the Giulia will only hold on to 38.5 percent of its value.
This is one of those situations that makes complete sense and yet no sense at all at the same time: Audi has bought a minority stake in the Sauber F1 team, on its way to entering the sport as a works team in 2026.
