Alfa Romeo is to leave Sauber and partner with the Haas F1 team from 2024 onwards, with the American team's Ferrari engines set to be branded with the Alfa Romeo name.
RacingNews365 revealed in May that Alfa Romeo's title sponsorship and renaming of the Sauber team would conclude at the end of 2023, with the original name temporarily returning to the grid while it waits for Audi to complete its takeover of the team in 2026.
However, Alfa Romeo was known to be keen to remain involved in F1, as the firm's CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato told RacingNews365 in February, and have since agreed a deal with Guenther Steiner's Haas outfit - whose current title sponsor Moneygram features similar colours to the Italian carmaker.
Both teams are currently customers of Ferrari and receive components including power units from the Maranello team, and according to Motorsport.it, the tie-up will see the Ferrari engine in the back of the Haas badged as an Alfa Romeo.
An announcement of the Haas-Alfa Romeo deal is expected during the Italian Grand Prix weekend of September 1-3.
There is precedent in F1 history for engines to be rebadged to suit commercial imperatives. Sauber's previous nine-year stint with year-old Ferrari engines from 1997 to 2005 saw them branded as Petronas, in deference to the Malaysian energy firm that sponsored the team at the time.
Additionally, the final three years of Red Bull's troubled partnership with Renault from 2016 to 2018 saw those engines rebadged as TAG Heuer, after a breakdown in relations between the French firm and the drinks-backed outfit.
